Almost every gay person I know voted for Barac Obama. Many of them saw him as some kind of savior. The January edition of the ADVOCATE had in a banner over Obama's face on the cover the question, "What will he do for you first?
Actually, I think the question should have been, "What will he do for you at all?"
There are many issues that gay people are, or should be, concerned about. Not just the issue of gay marriage. First of all, we do not have any kind of legislated civil rights. You can still, in many parts of this country, lose your job or be thrown out of your housing because you are gay and there is no legal recourse against it. There is a discriminatory tax advantage given to heterosexuals who marry and produce children. Single people, the vast majority of gays, pay a higher percentage of taxes than married couples and couples with children. Single persons with children also pay less taxes but there are still states within the United States that do not allow gays to adopt. Barac Obama, no matter how well intentioned, really can do nothing about these issues. If you look at the Constitution of the United States, a document often referred to but rarely read by those referring to it, you will see quite clearly that the body that must act on all of these issues is the legislative branch of our government -- the House of Representatives and the United States Senate. This is the body designated by the Constitution to make the rules and laws for the country. Not the president. This of course begs the question of what the fuck has Congress done for us. Fucking nothing! The same as it has done for the rest of the country. And because there is still a sizable cadre of Republicans still in office -- enough to cause filibusters and other delaying tactics. Because of this, I have very little hope, given the current appointments to the Supreme Court by George Bush, of much changing in the laws currently on the books in most states. And it is those laws, particularly changes to state constitutions, which are holding back any progress in gay people receiving their full civil rights. There is one thing that Obama can do and that is to put his support behind changes in legislation. To make gay rights an issue his administration firmly supports. But, the question is, will he? Obama started out his campaign without the full support of the African-American community. They didn't believe a black man could win the presidency. Some even questioned how 'black' Obama was. The African-American community still harbors tremendous prejudice against gays. This is been shown time and time again in their voting habits. I doubt that Obama is going to do much to alienate this base -- at least not in his first term when half his time will be spent running for his next term. Add to the fact, that this nation is facing one of its worst economic crisis since the Depression as well as two wars in which Americans are dying daily and you can understand why the whole issue of gay rights ends up way down on the list of Obama's priorities. Quite frankly, I don't expect our issues to become at all important to Obama until his second term (if there is one). He might make some kind of gesture in his first term looking to obtain support from the gay community to win his second term but that's about it. He's not going to come out in favor of gay marriage. He may take the necessary step of pushing Congress to eliminate "Don't Ask -- Don't Tell" but let's not forget that he was this very issue which almost sank the Clinton presidency at its outset. Obama is nothing if not a student of history -- especially political history. He is not going to make the same program this mistake that Bill Clinton did.
I sat and watched Obama take the oath of office. I cried like I never thought I would. Deep down in my heart I just believed that now there was a chance of the wrongs committed against every one who were on the outside of political power would be set right. In other words -- I had hope. I still have hope. I have hope in A man sitting in the White House who appears to have everything that the former president had none of. Integrity, honesty, care and concern for ordinary people, he also has one more thing that Bush did not have -- a real mandate. Not just a mandate to govern but a mandate to change how this country is governed. And I hope and pray that he does.

There is no national protection against hate crimes committed against gay people -- a segment of criminality which is on the increase throughout the country. But a national hate crimes bill has languished in Congress for more than five years. If it's ever going to be passed it is going to be passed because gay people rose up and flex their political muscle by warning their representatives in Congress not to count on their votes after doing nothing for them. |

It's taken me a few days to get over the emotional effect that the Obama election had on me. It was a very emotional time. I'm not used to anyone I support being elected to anything. That will give you some idea of where I am politically -- WAY out in left field.
But now, reality has set in for both me and the President elect. The fact of the matter is the new president's name is Barack and no matter what language you try to translate it into it doesn't mean "savior". This very brave man is facing just about the worst problems that our nation has ever gotten itself into. The economy is in the toilet, we are in the midst of two wars at the same time, the majority of the population has lost all hope in its government's ability to handle anything. When I was in DC last week I kept seeing this T-shirt that was being sold everywhere. It's sad, "I LOVE MY COUNTRY, IT'S THE GOVERNMENT I DON'T TRUST". I think that just about sums it up. President Obama has a monumental challenge facing him. A worse challenge than almost any other president has ever faced with the possible exception of Franklin D. Roosevelt. For the past eight years we have watched as the current administration has raped our economy, our Constitution, our military, and almost everything we hold dear about this country. I truly hope and pray that if no one in our government has the guts to put Bush and Cheney on trial, then I'm for sending them to the Hague where they can be tried as a war criminals they are. My problem is that for the first time that I can remember I actually believe that Barack Obama has told us the truth. He truly does one to bring about a change that will give control of the government back to the people of this country and not to the corporations and special interest groups that have controlled it for so long. I really believe he wants to end the political mutually assured destruction which the Republicans and Democrats have practiced for the last 10 years. I truly believe that President Obama once more than anything to bring this country back together. I'm just not sure that he can do it. I'm not sure ANYBODY (and I mean ANYBODY -- living or dead) could do it. What I do know is that if things are going to change, if things in this country are going to get better than Americans have to get off their size 50 asses and do something to make that change happen. We can't just sit back and expect politicians to do that for us. We've already tried that and look what it got us -- 8 years of the most inept and larcenous presidency in the history of this country. I cannot even begin to express how much respect I have for Barack Obama and even wanting to be president at this time. There is no amount of money you could offer me to take the job. You could throw in an entire regiment of Marines on call 24/7 and I still wouldn't be interested. Please note 1 thing, right now while he is President elect, he has almost no gray hairs in his head. Let's see how that count does four years from now. Let me make this suggestion: to all of you, who like me, love this man and are willing to do anything to help him beat the kind of president that we believe he can be. Let me suggest that we curb our natural inclination to jump on every possible thing we can criticize. Put away the razor sharp tongues, pull back your vicious claws, give the man a chance to do what you want him to do without having to worry about all that razor-sharp knives he knows are headed for his back. In other words give them a fucking break! Things are not going to go smoothly at the start. None of us, Obama included are perfect and we need to accept the fact that there are going to be mistakes in the beginning. More importantly PRAY for him, for us, for our troops, and for our country. | HISTORICAL NIGHT |

I have to admit that as I watched the election returns and finally heard CBS project Barac Obama as the President elect of the United States of America I broke down in tears. Tears because I never thought I would have the opportunity to vote for an African-American for president. Much less see that candidate win.
President Obama is a symbol of hope to every member of every minority. It does not matter if you are white or black, gay or straight, Hispanic, Oriental, or Haitian, no matter what way the American Society has tried to pigeonhole you, as trying to tell you that you are not welcome, as trying to marginalize your existence in your beliefs, tonight is the beginning of the end of discrimination and marginalization of ANYBODY in our society. At least, I pray that that's what it is.
And to the people outside the United States who could not vote for President Obama, you have seen once again the true power, the true heart. The TRUTH of who and what the United States is.
I am at peace tonight knowing that I will wake tomorrow in a country I can once again be proud of, a country that I no longer will have to hang my head in shame at the actions and policies it has created over the last eight years.

| THE MARRIAGE QUESTION |

I have a problem with the Democratic Party that seems to believe that, no matter what, they can expect anyone gay to vote for them despite doing absolutely nothing for us.
Bill Clinton reached out to the gay community in both of his presidential elections and then turned around and signed The Defense Of Marriage Act (DOMA) a federal law which defines marriage as being only between one man and one woman.
Obama and Biden have both stated their opposition to gay marriage. So what exactly do they offer us?
I'll be the first to admit that I'd rather cut off my arm then vote for a Republican -- especially that manipulative bitch from Alaska. However, my e-mail box has four or five e-mails a day from the Obama campaign begging me for money.
Some of you might notice that I have rethought my position on gay marriage. It is not, unfortunately, because I found someone I want to marry. I have just come to the conclusion that as long as the government and the society only believes that a committed, loving relationship between two human beings is called a marriage that it is time that the 15th amendment to the Constitution which guarantees equal protection under the law be put in force for all citizens regardless of their sexual orientation.
I still don't like the word marriage. It smacks too much of religion, an institution that has done more evil in the last 10 years to this country than any Middle Eastern terrorist. But the fact of the matter is without that word we are right back to the days before Brown versus the Board of Education living with a lie of "separate but equal". It was a lie when it came to public education and it is still a lie when it comes to the treatment of relationships by the government.
I'm sick and tired of listening to politicians of any party talk about allowing states to decide on their own to extend equal rights already guaranteed in the Constitution. Without the use of constitutional mandate through the courts, racism would still be the order of the day in this country, just as homophobia is now. No state should be allowed to let its citizens decide what rights will be given to which people. The "founding fathers" realized that the public could not be trusted with the rights of other citizens and so they enshrined in them in the Constitution and it is time that those rights were demanded.
It is time for us to put the Democratic Party on notice that we will no longer support them if they do not support us. No more money, no more activism, no more assistance in getting elected.

| SEXISM AND POLITICS |

One of the things I've noticed over the years is the women in the conservative movement. They all seem to follow a pattern. First of all, they are more strident (read bitchy) than any of the males. Second of all, they all preach the gospel of a woman's place is in the home, having babies and obeying her husband. The strange thing is of course that none of these women practice what they preach. And neither does the conservative movement or its voice -- the Republican Party.
Now that the Republicans have even gone so far as to nominate a woman for vice president of the United States, they continue with the same practice of sexually based politics. Otherwise, why has there candidate never once faced a press conference? Why were all her meetings with world leaders at the United Nations kept secret from the press? And most importantly, if candidate McCain feels that he needs to be in Washington to straighten out the economic mess that he and his party basically created over the last 40 years, why did they decide to "freeze" their campaign rather than allowing Governor Palin to step forward and continue the campaign herself?
I guess the real question is what is it that McCain and the Republican Party fear about Governor Palin being put in situations where there is no script for her to follow? What damage do they think she will do if she is freed from her "handlers"? What questions do they fear her being asked.
The way they act, they must know about some really terrible skeletons in her closet. We've had hints of them in the last few weeks: "Troopergate", her husband's involvement in crucial decisions concerning policies and budget items for the state of Alaska, the fact that we have e-mails that were sent to him concerning items which now the governor is claiming are covered under executive privilege -- even though, Todd Palin was not elected by the people of Alaska and as a private citizen (which is all he is) does not have the right to this type of privileged information.
Most importantly, do they fear that she IS as incompetent as many of us fear and has no business being "one heartbeat from the presidency" especially when the president who, if elected, would be the oldest man ever elected to that office?
I will be honest and admit that I think McCain in the Republican party chose her for the same reason that the auto industry in Detroit has chosen beautiful actresses and draped them over their cars to use sax to sell products they can't get rid of. It reminds me too much of this statement by Billy Crystal on Saturday Night Live when he played a character named Fernando. Fernando always said "it is better to look good than to feel good." And frankly the idea of a Palin/McCain administration does not make me feel good at all.

| What's wrong with porn? |

I'm sure for many of you the answer to this question is-nothing. And I might agree with you except for some very disturbing things I've seen in porn recently. Now I have a confession to make. I watch almost every kind of porn there is. And yes that includes straight bisexual and lesbian, though very little lesbian. And I have noticed a disturbing situation especially in straight porn. It concerns cum. In gay films I see cum almost worshiped. It does not appear as if a guy shoots his load in or on another guy as some kind of punishment or a way to say you disgust me. But that is exactly what I see in straight porn. Guys who are supposed to be hot for females instead treat them like their little less than a toilet. I'm wondering what this says about straight males and how they really feel about women. I'm not saying the guys do this in real life, as they probably never get laid began in their life. But what one wonders is what kind of fantasies they have as they watch these films?
It has taken me a while to get to this point. The women in the women's movement have said for a long time that port is degrading to women. I can see that it is. The strange thing is, gay porn worships the male. Every part of him including (if you're watching the right film) his piss and his cum. Evidently, as researchers into relationships have discovered, gay relationships tend to be the most equal. And I guess our porn reflects that. So move over and hand me some lube, I've got this little film I want to show you...

| In memoriam-George Carlin |

For many of my generation George Carlin was the epitome of the counterculture. He said the things we didn't dare say, he verbalized the things we thought. Along with Richard Pryor, he was one of the bookends who provided us with a vision of who we were. Not only did he make us laugh, he made us think.
Following the death of his wife he seemed to turn more bitter and cynical. But that is understandable. All of us have become more bitter and cynical in the preceding years.
May he rest in peace.

| MEMORIAL DAY- 2008 |

Like so many holidays in this country that have become nothing but excuses for commerce, Memorial Day has likewise become a day to sell furniture, major appliances, and automobiles. People are home from work but with very little understanding of why. In some areas of the country it is the start of the major tourist season. Here in South Florida it marks the end of the major tourist season (nobody, not even the people who live here, really want to be here during the hot muggy summer and hurricane season.)
But that is not what this day is all about. Originally called Decoration Day, it was meant to be a day to decorate the graves of soldiers who had fallen in the great Civil War. It was meant to be a time to remember the ultimate sacrifice these young men had made to preserve our nation as a whole.
Later, it became a holiday to remember the fallen in all our wars.
Just as when I was growing up, we are involved in yet another bloody, useless war far away from our own shores but killing our soldiers nonetheless. Like so many other Americans, I am left with a dilemma. I hate this war, I want to see all of those who foisted this war on our country with their lies put on trial and executed for treason. I want those captains of industry who have made obscene profits from this war executed as well for they all had their hand as accomplices in the murder of more than 4000 innocent American lives.
On the other hand, there is not enough that we as Americans can do to a honor the brave men and women of our armed forces who have put themselves in harm's way for us. But the only true way to a honor the fallen of all our wars is to stop dishonoring their sacrifice by constantly involving ourselves in more wars to kill more soldiers. We need to find a way that there will be no more new graves dug at Arlington. We need to find a way to engage with other nations of the world in peace. We need to find a way that the call for the ultimate sacrifice of life is no longer a necessary part of any nation's foreign policy.
General George S. Patton, once defined war in this way, " the idea of war is not to die for your country but to get the other guy to die for his." This idea needs to be rooted out all the world's consciousness. It is never the people who decide for war who actually go and fight those wars. The ones responsible never face the consequences of their decision. If George Bush and Saddam Hussein had to meet in a man to man combat, we would not have 4000 dead and more than 100,000 severely wounded soldiers of our armed forces. We might have been lucky and gotten rid of both of them at the same time.
Every war that this country has fought has been deemed to be inevitable at the time. 20, 30, 40, 50, years later historians 'prove' that the war could have been avoided. We have become so brilliant in the last half century that it didn't take but four years for the people of this country to figure out how unnecessary the war is we are presently engaged in are. The only problem is that the politicians and the industrialists who profit from this war cannot let go of it.
If you really want to do on are too were fallen troops, go to the polls in November and throw the bastards out. Then demand of the new legislators and leaders in the executive branch of government that they create war crimes trials for all of them. Make sure that people understand that if they engage this country in war so that they can increase their profits or their power they will pay with their lives. This will stop people and make them think of peaceful ways of resolving conflict first.

| WHY CAN'T WE TALK TO CHINA? |

The heartbreaking images of parents sitting and waiting for the bodies of their children to be pulled from the rubble of schools has, moved each of us in some way. As we watch day after day the aftermath of the horrendous earthquake in China, I'm sure that each of us is moved to reach out in some way to the Chinese people who are suffering so much.
Why is it then that there is no way to express to the Chinese government as an individual your care and concern for what their people are going through?
I went searching on the Internet and found an embassy in both Washington, DC and New York city. There are websites for these embassies of the People's Republic of China as there are for the three consulates which the government also maintains in this country. But not one of the web sites has a means of contact. There was a contact button on the web site of the New York City embassy but when you click on it it tells you this function has been removed.
What is the People's Republic of China afraid of? Criticism? Certainly they've earned that for their handling of the Tibet issue. But you would think that a country that wants to show itself off by hosting the Olympic Games would have someone with better public relations sense. You cannot stifle dissent or criticism from the rest of the world if you're going to be a part of that world. Nor should you cut yourself off, from any possible sympathy or concern with the plight of your people.
Perhaps the Chinese government will learn a lesson from what is happening in Burma. The military junta there is reaping a whirlwind of international condemnation and deservedly so for their foot dragging on allowing aid into the country for the victims of the cyclone. China could well squander the world sympathy for their misfortune by refusing to open themselves to expressions of that sympathy from the rest of the world.
China needs to learn that there is no benefit from a lack of communication. Only consequences.

| TAKE YOUR GUNS TO WORK! |

If anyone doesn't believe that Florida is a backward Neanderthal southern state more akin to Mississippi or Louisiana, today's action by the Florida legislature should be proof. By a vote of 26 to 13 the Florida senate approved a measure that would allow Floridians to bring their personal weapons to work with them as long as they have permits to carry concealed weapons. The bill would allow them to keep the weapon locked in their vehicle in the parking lot of their employment.
The most insane thing about this bill is that supposedly it is for self protection. But from who? If the gun is locked in your car out in the parking lot and some one enters your workplace with a gun in their hand, how are you expected to get out to the parking lot I lock your car and get your gun to protect yourself?
Of course this bill was sponsored by the National Rifle Association. But it was also pushed by some unions. I guess the postal workers union was one of them.
I wish someone could tell me what earthly good our becoming one of the most well armed countries on the face of the earth is doing us. Every year violent gun crimes rise in this country. The people killed (mostly children) as collateral damage in gun violence increases. And all because people fear other people with guns. Maybe if there weren't so fucking many of them, there would be less to fear.
But like the NRA always argues, people have our right to hunt at work.
If there was ever a reason I'm glad to be retired finally, this is it!

Today, thanks to an e-mail from move-on.org. I was able to listen to and download Barak Obama's speech on race relations with in this country. I grew up getting to listen to John Kennedy's inaugural speech, Nixon's inaugural speech. Johnson's inaugural speech. Carter's inaugural speech (highly forgettable). In school I saw films of President Eisenhower, prime Minister Churchill, and some of the greatest speech makers of the 20th century. I studied, and memorized Lincoln's Gettysburg address. But I have to tell you I have never been more moved emotionally and intellectually by a political speech as I was by this one. It has decided me once and for all who we need for president of the United States in 2008. There can be no other answer than Barack Obama. I'm sick to death of the crap about experience. What we ought to be looking for in a president is not experience but the ability to lead. The president needs to get this country a vision. Obama has one, Hillary has one but Hillary's vision is of more of the same politics that have been the downfall of this country. If you want more of the same that we've had over the last 16 years, then by all means vote for Hillary and the corporates money she represents. But if you really want a leader who will make changes in a political system that shuts out everyone but the wealthy everyone but the corporations then by all means vote Obama. To be honest with you, Obama is the candidate I have waited all my life to vote for. It is my own prejudice and blindness, which I freely admit to, which could and let me see a black man as that candidate. To say his speech opened my eyes and my heart that would be a horrendous understatement. I like this man's vision for America. I like this man's vision OF America.He sees us as far better people then up until this time I ever believed we could be.
Just like so many who have flocked to his campaign,Obama gives me hope!!!

My good friend Treva Harte sent me an e-mail asking me when I was going to update the blog. She wanted to rub it in my face that she'd already done hers.
I told her, " when I get pissed at something. Didn't you realize that's how I do the blog. I wait for something that pisses me off, and then I write about it.
It only took me opening two more e-mails to get really pissed about something.
Do you realize that this summer, American athletes are going to compete in the Olympics in CHINA! The country that has helped ruin our economy, the country that is the last vestige (other than Cuba) of Stalinism in the world. And if that were not bad enough the Chinese government holds the people and government of Tibet by force. There have been riots there since March 14, 2008 protesting the lack of say that the Tibetan people have in their own government. Indeed, they still consider the Dalhi Llama the spiritual and temporal leader of their country. (kind of like the Pope and Vatican City)
People are dying in this little country on top of the world because they want the freedom to govern themselves. But the great George Bush has completely ignored this fight for freedom and is going to allow America to go play games in China. GEE!? I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that there's no oil in Tibet? Ya think?

This award is humbly given to any television or radio show which shows, with clarity, and determination, the depth that Americans are willing to go to to get money. This year's winner as a program on the Fox network while we all know Fox is incapable of producing even 5 minutes of news which is without Rupert Murdoch's prejudices. Now, the network has produced the show so cruel in its conception, so oily in its presentation. That it must be written by Richard Nixon in hell. The plot of the show is devilishly simple a contestant is connected to a lie detector machine and they then make him act like kissing feeble father it is already apparent that there are difficulties between father and son and yet the father is brought on stage to ask a question
" with a life you lead, do you think I still love you okay supposedly somewhere behind the scenes there is some kind of expert on reading and interpreting for some reason you'll never pulled out of your surveillance with that show finally here moment of truth in remembers of the family started shooting each other.

| POLITICIAN: THY NAME IS HYPOCRITES |

It would seem that politicians have the most difficult time keeping their dick in their pants of any profession. Even more so than athletes.
The latest example, of course, is governor Elliot Spitzer of New York. A man with a brilliant political career ahead of him and a large number of successful prosecutions of prostitution rings behind him.
And that may be the problem. Many years ago I used to watch Jimmy Swaggart on TV before his scandals drop them off the air. I mentioned this to a friend of mine who is a Methodist minister. She said to me, " He's going to be found dead in motel with the hooker." I remember being extremely shocked by this because my friend never said a bad word about anybody, and of course, there was no hint of a scandal at that time.
When the scandals finally came, I went back to her and asked her how she knew. She told me, " no one can preach that well about a sin they don't know intimately."
It would seem that the New York governor was too busy worrying about everybody else's morals to be concerned about his own.
It is said that a hard cock has no conscience. Into many politicians case, it has no brains either. The most disgusting thing about this, is that like all of the other recent sex scandals among politicians when it all boils down what happens is they do it because they can. Even Bill Clinton admitted that this was the most morally indefensible reason to do anything. He ought to know!

| THE LIFE OF A WRITER |

For the last 10 years I have been seriously writing male - male erotic romance. I've written a short stories I have written novels. Many of you have a asked where I get my ideas for the stories. Ideas can come from anywhere. They can come from my own life, from things that I experience or they can come from daydreams or fantasies I have in my head.
I and easily bored. So, when I'm in a situation where I'm bored my mind almost automatically starts to create stories almost like watching a movie in my head.
Usually, the first thing I discover is a character to build the story around. Because this is romance, that character must fall in love. And because there needs to be something to hold the reader's interest, I must put that character into some kind of conflict. For example, in my latest story A CONVICT BROTHER-BUCKY the first character I developed was Bucky's brother Shane. Shane's conflict, of course, are his incestuous feelings for his brother. Add to this, the fact that his brother is sent to prison.
There are three things that a writer needs. The first is an idea. The second is a way to write that idea. Finally, and most importantly, a writer needs solitude in which to write.
I spend an inordinate amount of time alone. I don't have a lover (though God knows, I'd love to have one.) I live alone. And I seem to spend all of my life sitting in front of a computer.
Writers tend to be very shy people. Some of us 'don't play well with others'. Our people skills tend to be somewhat lacking. The one time that we get excited is when we're with another writer, talking about what we do and how we do it. I have two very close friends who also write erotic romance. I usually talk on the phone or e-mail them daily. One knee is in Indiana and the other is in Washington, DC. I send stories to them I'm working on when I can't figure out what to do. I edit the stories by reading them out loud to one of them. That is how I find the mistakes in them. Believe me, spell check ain't all it's cracked up to be. And this voice recognition program I'm using tends to add words that I haven't said.
One thing I can tell you about writing, is that you don't love to do it. It is very hard work. You do it because you have no choice. It's almost like being addicted to crack. You perhaps can well understand why the stroke which took away the use of my left arm and hand drove me absolutely crazy until I was able to work the voice recognition program and write again.
I've already submitted the ideas for three new novels to my publisher. And I've already started on all three of them. Yes, you can work on more than one novel at a time if you are able to keep the character names straight. I can remember early on doing two stories at once and confusing the names of the characters along with my readers.
Writing is not a profession that I suggest to anyone. I consider myself extremely lucky to have the support of so many readers. They are what keep me writing.
If you already have the addiction, that I urge you to keep a writing. eventually, you will find your voice and your niche.

| The Problem of Democracy |

Thanks to a voice recognition program, I'm able to make entries into this journal again. The current political situation with two very able candidates vying for the Democratic party's nomination for president brings up a very interesting problem with democracy. Both candidates are equally capable, both have very strong support among voters, and each would make a very good leader for this country. I think that most Democratic voters would really like to see a Clinton / Obama ticket. At least I know I would. And I don't much care which one is on top.
But that can only happen, if they both agree to it if. The voters have nothing to say about it. Is the office of vice president so unimportant that we don't get the chance to decide was going to fulfill the office? Certainly, we have seen in the current administration just how influential the office of vice President can be. The current vice president has had enormous evil influence on policy and actions of our government. Can we afford to have some one in that office and with this same kind of power and influence without are being able to decide who that person will be? Since the vice president is as they say " one heartbeat away from the presidency" there is every chance that that person could well become president. We have a already had quite a few vice presidents become president at least one in my lifetime.
I believe, that it is time to correct this problem by making the vice presidency not only an elected office but one that must go through the primary process as well. As voters we should have the right to know what kind of person will sit as the replacement for the president if that person should die or become incapacitated.
Democracy demands this.

| AGREEMENT - THE GAY DILEMMA |

I saw a cartoon the other day in a gay community newspaper. It was a gay male complaining about the fact that Transsexuals didn't belong in the gay rights movement, that they had nothing to do with being gay. The character went on, eliminating group after group of Bi's and other minorities within the gay community (including Lesbians) until he came to the two groups he felt could stay - Drag Queens and Leathermen. As long as they were kept in hiding.
The cartoon wasn't at all funny to me. It got me thinking about how little "community" there is in the gay community. Some of it is the fact that many gays have very little in common with other gays, other than an attraction to their own sex. That isn't a lot to build community on.
Blacks, Latinos and Asians all have shared cultural experiences. The only shared "cultural" experience that gays have is that oftentimes lonely and bitter time in our lives known as "coming out". For most of us, no matter when it happened, either early or late, it was traumatic and a very isolating time. Again, not much to build any kind of community on.
Gays exist across every spectrum of society you can think of. Remember the slogan, "We Are Everywhere" - well, you ain't just whistling Dixie, son! That's absolutely true. We are in the Government, the Military, in professional Religion. We are in every profession that claims it doesn't want us. Yet we persist in being there.
This all came up for me, just like it does every four years, because of politics. The dilemma I'm always faced with is: Do I vote for the politician who knows all the right things, all the buzzwords, to pander to gays (just the way certain politicians pander to the Religious Right, I might add) or do I truly look for the candidate that I feel is going to do the best job for the country and hope that includes protecting my rights as a gay American?
As to getting all of the gay community behind even one political party - well, you know how successful that's been. (Even if I don't know how, after the destruction wrought by GWB over the last 7 years, ANY gay person could still belong to the Republican Party) As to rallying around one particular candidate for President? Good luck with that. Let me know how well you do.
Personally, I think we've got this thing ass-backwards (that's okay in sex but not much else). I think we need to really try to build a community that has room for all of us in it before we let the professional political machines and the professional marketers define us without our permission or help. We need to find ways to come together and try to understand each other and just what our needs as individuals and as a community are before we allow some politician to tell us what we need.
So if you're attracted to your own sex or, even if you feel you're physically the "wrong" one, when you go into that polling booth to vote, don't expect any politician you vote for to do for us what we haven't done for ourselves.
Don't let them make you think that they're going to go out on a political limb for us, wave a Presidential signing pen and make same-sex marriage the law of the land or allow gays to serve openly in the military or give us the right to adopt children in every state. Politicians like to make us believe that but, remember this - it was the last Democratic president who signed the federal "Defense Of Marriage Act (DOMA)" which enshrines into federal law the fact that marriage can only be between a male and a female.

| ARROGANT? HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT? |

It is perhaps the most difficult thing in the world, to see the faults we accuse others of having in ourselves. No on likes to have a mirror held up to them and find themselves having all the same warts and wrinkles that we could so easily see in others. It is especially hard for a nation.
But that is exactly what President Rafael Correa of Ecuador did on Monday afternoon. He held up the mirror of the world view to the United States and forced upon us the vision of how arrogant we are as a nation.
How - you might ask.
Very simply. It seems that the United States' lease on a air-force base in Ecuador is ending in 2009 and President Correa has refused to re-negotiate a new lease. He wants members of the United States Military out of his country. Now, most of this is because he is a close friend of President Hugo Chavez - no lover of the United States either. But the issue became very clear on Monday when President Correa offered to make a new lease with the United States for the base in his country on one condition - that Ecuador could put a base for the Ecuadorian military in Miami. As President Correa put it, if the United States wants to put troops in his country, then the US shouldn't have any problem with Ecuadorian troops in their country.
And, yet, the US does. It has terrible problems with the idea of another country having troops based in the US but sees nothing wrong with our troops being in more than twenty countries around the globe. We have the right to put our troops in YOUR country. You don't have the right to put your troops in OUR country.
Arrogant? Nah! Just American.

| What Constitutes Legal Orders? |

More and more generals (all "retired") are coming forth to condemn the administration and their failures in Iraq. The lastest is General Sanchez who, you might remember, was the commanding general over the troops in Iraq during the Abu Graib scandal. When asked why he was only beginning to condemn the White House, the State Department and almost everybody else involved in the war, now that he has been retired for 2 years, he claimed it was because a commander doesn't have the right to question or condemn "lawful" orders while on active duty.
Sound pretty good on the face of it - except...
What is lawful about obeying orders that you know will only get members of the military killed while accomplishing absolutely nothing? Don't officers of the United States military have any code of honor that keeps them from sending our troops into meat grinders just so that they can continue in their military careers? Why haven't any of these generals refused to order troops to their death and, instead, resigned and SAID something about what is going on and why they are resigning - AT THE TIME THEY RESIGN - NOT TWO YEARS LATER!
As far as I can see from their behavior, we seem to have a general officer corps which is either made up of cowards or men with no moral fiber or backbone (just like the politicians who run them). They knew the war was/is unwinnable. They knew that the Administration was not interested in really winning but providing money for their friends through non-bid contracts and oil. They knew that they were sending troops to their deaths for nothing.
Lawful? Maybe. Moral? Never!

| What Price Treason? |

Can there be any more doubt that the man sitting in the White House, the vice preseident and their political party are traitors to the American People?
Need proof?
1. Lied to the American People about the need for the invasion of Iraq when his real reason was to capture the oil fields for his friends in the oil business.
2. Caused the death of over 4,000 Ameican Military Personnel and the wounding of thousands more in his phony war.
3. With his cronies in the Republican Party, cut funding for the care of wounded service personnel coming out of Iraq and Afghanistan.
4. Allowed the American oil companies to not only set energy policy through his co-conspirator vice president but allowed them to make obscene profits based on their phony shortages.
5. Now, to add insult to injury, this traitorous bastard has vetoed a bill to extend health coverage to the children of this nation by $35 billion dollars over 5 years - at the same time he's demanding $190 billion to continue his phony war.
It's time to try him and his cronies and execute them for treason during their own phony war.
Execution too harsh, you think? What would you suggest for someone who has killed over 4,000 brave members of the military through lies and decption to make profits for his family and supporters in the oil market?
I'm sorry we can't make the execution immensely painful and last for several years!
